Ultra Pleat | Ultra Energy Savings

tripleatMany users assume that all MERV 8 pleated air filters are the same in both efficiency and performance within your system.  This could not be further from the truth.  Yes, many products look similar, but you need to dive into the technical information in order to compare one pleated filter to another.  Pleated air filters are used in a variety of applications across all industries.  They can be found in healthcare facilities as pre-filtration or in commercial buildings as the only means of equipment protection.  In both of these applications ULTRA low resistance pleated filters, used in combination of variable frequency drives (VFD) can lower the energy that an air handler uses to both move and condition the air.

In order to accurately compare one pleated filter to another there are 3 main factors that should be taken into consideration.  First you should look for pleated filters that have been tested in accordance with the ASHRAE 52.2 test and that have also been tested to the optional Appendix J standard.  The Appendix J standard includes a conditioning step that treats the filter in order to eliminate any electrostatic media enhancement that may cause the filter to not perform at desired levels in real world applications.  By completing the test, the filter will be designated with a MERV A rating demonstrating the results of the conditioning test.  Next, a user should look at the square footage of media in a pleated air filter.  The media in this style of filtration product is generally surface loading, so the greater amount of filtration media will generally provide longer service life.  The third element that should be considered is the initial pressure drop of the pleated air filter.  When using a variable speed/frequency drive, an air handler will use less energy moving air through a lower resistant air filter.  The filter with the lowest resistance will offer energy savings as compared to other pleated filters with higher resistance to air flow.

The Tri-Pleat ULTRA is available in 1″ / 2″ / and 4″ depths and in both a standard and high capacity model.  The filter has been tested in accordance with ASHRAE 52.2-2012 and tested with the optional appendix J standard.  The Tri-Pleat ULTRA achieves a MERV 8A rating.  The 24″ x 24″ x 2″ standard capacity Tri-Pleat ULTRA  has 12.8 square feet of media and an initial resistance of 0.24″ wg.  These specifications outperform offer pleated offerings in similar filter styles.  The high capacity model leads the industry with 19.2 square feet of media with an initial resistance of 0.21″ wg.  Again, this style of filter will offer tremendous energy savings as compared to other pleated filters in the market place.
